SUMMARY
I have the Canadian English dictionary. spellchecking doesn't work in Kate. Is there a fix for this?

Steve I've just checked this from git master and can confirm that running spellecheck from Tools > Spelling > Spelling works as well as Automatic Spell Checking when enabled.

Can you please retest and confirm this is still an issue for you, thanks.
