Description Tyson Tan 2020-05-28 07:49:39 UTC
Krita doesn't have a place to give credit to its translators, neither does its documentation website, anywhere.

Given the amount of work and professionalism they required to get the translations done properly -- about 210,000 words + maintaining the documentation's translation where it is constantly losing large portion of translated strings due to merely spellchecks of the original. I think it might be a good idea to give the translators credit to make them feel their effort is appreciated.

Neither are the original authors of the manual credited, so I guess we should add a credits page to the manual, with a section for the translators. For the translations of the actual application, we often don't _know_ the translators, since it's mostly the head of the translation team who pushes the translations to websvn. I'm not sure what to do there.

The documentation website has sometimes credited its creators of particular pages in the "source code": https://docs.krita.org/zh_CN/_sources/user_manual/japanese_animation_template.rst.txt

Or indirectly: https://docs.krita.org/zh_CN/contributors_manual/community.html

GIMP and Kate displays their translator in the about dialogue (when the application loads localized translations). GIMP marks each translator with their active years, usually just one or two persons for a certain period. It also gives credit to the documentation's writers and artists contributed to the project. I think is a nice touch.

Since the PO file doesn't record the translator for each string, translators cannot be tracked automatically. I think we have to ask every language's head of translation for the (roughly correct) name list.

I did some research, found out that some KDE applications add these extra translatable strings to their POT file, for example:

Translators
- Default: Your names (active years), separated with comma
- Translation: KDE China (1990-2020),Weng Xuetian (2001-2007),Guo Yunhe (2007-2020)

Translator emails
- Default: Your emails, separated with comma, same order as the names
- Translation: kde-china@kde.org,xxx@gmail.com,xxx@outlook.com

We can also use the same thing as the author list for listing the individual translators. Just tell the translators to fill in their own info instead. Information provided by: https://tdg.docbook.org/tdg/4.5/author.html Used as follows:

CREDIT_FOR_TRANSLATORS
The Chinese translation of this application was provided by KDE Chinese localization team. To become a translator, please go to: URL.

ROLES_OF_TRANSLATORS
<authorgroup>
<author><firstname>Yunhe</firstname><surname>Guo</surname><email>xxx@gmail.com</email></author>
<author><firstname>Xuetian</firstname><surname>Weng</surname><email>xxx@gmail.com</email></author>
</authorgroup>

We can then tell to Krita only display the translator page when those strings are translated.

Well, the problem is that we don't use docbook for Krita's documentation.
Comment 5 Tyson Tan 2020-05-31 14:16:43 UTC
I used that as example for Krita's About dialogue could be. In that way you don't need to ask who translate what. Everything will be automated.

setting this to wishlist, as right now noone is credited and it will require a lot of script magic to make this work.
Comment 7 Halla Rempt 2020-09-10 10:20:28 UTC
It's not as complicated as all that, at least not for the about dialog.

Git commit f79e2349773071a96d0e32676f28cf21c45813a0 by Boudewijn Rempt.
Committed on 10/09/2020 at 11:24.
Pushed by rempt into branch 'krita/4.3'.

Add a translators tab to the aboutbox

This breaks string freeze, but the strings are present in kxmlgui -- which
we don't use in Krita.
