Description rfjames 2020-04-30 20:43:53 UTC
SUMMARY. I want to eliminate background colors including white around an object. This I am able to accomplish however when I save the file I am required to choose a color to fill the pixels. This is what I don not want to do. I wish to "see through the areas I eliminated!

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. High lite and area and delete it
2.
3.

OBSERVED RESULT
When I do that it has no background fill this is what I expected however when saving the file I am required to select a color. This is what I do not want to do!

EXPECTED RESULT

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows:
macOS: macOS Catalina ver 10.15.4
Linux/KDE Plasma:
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version:
KDE Frameworks Version:
Qt Version:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The required results were a function in Photoshop! I would have thought it was in your program!
Comment 1 Tiar 2020-04-30 20:48:42 UTC
What format do you save to? PNG has this function, while JPEG doesn't because you cannot save transparency in JPEG file, even in Photoshop, because JPEG doesn't support transparency.

Make sure that while saving to PNG, the checkbox "Store alpha channel (transparency)" is *checked*, otherwise it won't save the transparency.

I tried to follow your suggestions however now it is saving not as a transparence but now it is storing the png with a black background fill!

A lot of image viewers don't really show transparency and just fill it with white or black instead. If you open the file (the png file that you saved) in Krita, do you see transparency checkers or black?

(Also remember: it's always good to save as .kra as well, it will save your layers and everything else as it is in Krita).

Also btw: in general, it's easier to use krita-artists.org forum first to get help - it's more user-friendly and user-oriented than this website. This website is more like for development.

Thank you for getting back to me.  When I open the file I see black.  No. checkers . or white if I am able to change the color but it requires a color for transparency saving.  I tried PNG an JPG

Can you please make a screenshot of your Krita window before saving (so I can see the image with transparency (removed background) inside Krita) and then another one when you are asked about PNG settings? (First you're asked for the name of the file, and then there are settings, I mean the dialog with settings). And you can share the result PNG image as well. (If you don't want to share your image, you can create a new one with some random strokes, what's important is just the transparency).

Screenshot of the rose and random strokes behind it on a new layer

The outline file contains the rose with transparency. See the screenshot; there are transparency checkers and if I add a new layer behind it and paint on it, it is visible. Not all white areas are transparent though; to get all of them transparent, you can use Filter -> Colors -> Color to Alpha.

Thank you for your time and assistance! I deeply appreciate it! I have had 3 heart attacks, 3 strokes, 2 open heart surgeries.  At age 72 I know the Lord is not finished with me yet!  I send you a recording of me a few years ago in the Local Mall.
Thank you for all you help!
