SUMMARY
By "background color square" I mean the little square in Artistic Color Selector on the background color selected. Not the "background color indicator" in the lower right corner.

Similar to Bug 324121, but only the background color square is wrong.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Select a background color, say blue, by right-clicking blue on Artistic Color Selector.
2. Select a different foreground color, say red, by left-clicking red on Artistic Color Selector.

OBSERVED RESULT
Both the "circle" and "square" are on red. See observed.png

EXPECTED RESULT
"Circle" is on red and "square" is on blue. See expected.png

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
macOS: 10.14.6
Krita: Nightly build (44e3f62)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Same with 4.2.9

This is intentional as described by de documentation: "The blip shows the position of current foreground color on the wheel (black&white circle) and on the value scale (black&white line). Last selected swatches are outlined." from "https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_manual/dockers/artistic_color_selector.html#usage"

If you believe the oulined square should correspond to the backgroundcolor and the blip to the foreground could you open the topic for discussion in the forum where other users can add input. (https://krita-artists.org/)

Thanks. I missed the "Last selected swatched are outlined" part. Sorry for mis-report.
