SUMMARY

Creating a new folder or file on the desktop currently always aligns it automatically to the left or right, depending on the setting.
However once on the desktop, the files/folders can freely be positioned on the grid.

Creating a new file/folder or moving it to the desktop should however place it at close position to the mouse pointer.

Imagine the situation having a half screen filling window blocking the view on the left part of the desktop. If the files/folders created are automatically left aligned, they will vanish behind this window. This is not optimal.

This has since been implemented. IIRC it was even a few years ago.
