This has happened to me multiple times.
I unlock widgets and start moving one around, placing it in a different place.
Then I'm not sure what happens but it just disappears from the panel.
If I open the Add Widget panel, it shows a (1) on it, meaning it still exists .. somewhere.

This is bad, especially since the widget might still be consuming cpu.

Can you try again with the Plasma 5.18 beta? There's been some work around this.
