Description Potomac 2019-10-18 22:56:06 UTC
SUMMARY

I use archlinux,

since plasma 5.17.0 I notice that after plasma has booted the panel doesn't appear immediately,

the wallpaper and icons on desktop appear first, and the panel appears only after a delay of 5 seconds,

this weird delay doesn't occur with the previous versions of plasma,

I use hard disk (not SSD),

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install plasma 5.17.0

OBSERVED RESULT
- At cold boot you will notice that the panel is the last element to appear, after a long delay of 5 seconds
- With the previous version this latency doesn't exist for the panel

EXPECTED RESULT
The panel should appear quickly after the boot, shortly after the display of desktop,

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows:
macOS:
Linux/KDE Plasma: archlinux 64 bits, plasma 5.17.0
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 5.17.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.63.0
Qt Version: 5.13.1
Comment 1 Paul 2019-10-19 13:45:36 UTC
I'm also experiencing this delay...

Two hardware identical machines (apart from storage drives), both running:

Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20191016
KDE Plasma Version: 5.17.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.63.0
Qt Version: 5.13.1
Kernel Version: 5.3.5-1-default

One machine has an HDD, the delay I'm seeing is similar to the OP, approx 4-5 seconds.

The other machine has an SSD, the delay is considerably less, but nonetheless still noticeable.

I can confirm this issue specially when I have widgets placed on desktop.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.17.90
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.66.0
Qt Version: 5.14.1

Turns out all I had to do was clear the clipboard history.. Right click the klipper copy/paste manager icon and clear history. I wrote a page about this if you care to know how I stumbled across this. https://jordanpetersontech.wordpress.com/2022/11/18/solved-kde-desktop-plasma-panel-slow-to-load/
Comment 4 Nate Graham 2023-09-18 21:10:28 UTC
We can either make the panel appear quickly and load its contents later, or we can delay its appearance until it's ready, but we can't do both; see Bug 447476.

If this was about the Panel generally loading slowly, is anyone still able to reproduce it in Plasma 5.27?
