Aren't the existing options View->Show Assistants Preview/View->Show Assistants sufficient? For the Vanishing Point assistants, when not snapping, I've found it very useful to have them visible for checking and planning purposes, especially when using a photograph as the basis of an image construction. The existing View options are enough to remove them if I don't want to see them. setting this to needsinfo till boud's question has been answered.
