SUMMARY
The sent emails are stored in the templates folder instead of sent-mail folder.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Compose a new email.
2. Press send.

OBSERVED RESULT
The email will be kept temporarily in the outbox folder until it is actually sent (as expected). When it is sent, a copy of it is kept in the templates folder.

EXPECTED RESULT
The sent emails should be kept in the sent-mail folder.

Is the sent-mail folder for the identity configured correctly?
Configure KMail - Accounts - Identities - Modify - Advanced
Please check that the Sent-mail, Drafts and Templates folcers are configured correctly in this dialogue.

You are right. The identity configuration was wrong. I am not sure why it was configured like that, but it worked as expected after I fixed it.
