Description Matthias 2019-08-09 18:38:20 UTC
Hi :D

Lots of people - including me - have asked my why there are just 7 objects saved by default. Is there any reason to it?

Any downsides, increasing that to much more?
Comment 1 bruno13 2019-08-10 00:55:34 UTC
Thanks Matthias to open this bug report. I miss that since I have to use Plasma 5. Under 4 we could have a lot more entries to search.

My personal suggestion is to include Klipper again.

This is user-configurable; you can make it much higher if you want.

As for why 7 is the default, I guess it had to be set at something. :) Changing the default is pretty trivial, code-wise: https://cgit.kde.org/plasma-workspace.git/tree/klipper/klipper.kcfg#n64

I would recommend submitting a patch with your justification for increasing it. A reasonable argument will probably prevail.

thanks Nate
I did not understand anything. If it is so simple then why not produce a small but detailed how-to?
I have no hand nor mind for coding. I need gui, else I have no chance.

Sure. Right-click on clipboard icon in the System Tray > Configure Clipboard > change "Clipboard history size" to as high as you'd like.

You can make it as high as 2048 if you'd like. The trade-off here is memory. The bigger you make your clipboard, the more memory its contents will take up (particularly if you have it configured to keep images). Presumably that's why it's not set higher by default.

Thanks for this very quick response. My fault was, that I overlooked the «configure» possibility.
Comment 6 Matthias 2019-08-14 20:24:04 UTC
Hi Nate :)

I am really not the patch guy. Have never done this yet.
The reasoning is pretty clear, at the very least 20 or so is reasonable in the day and age where a single homepage is mostly around some hundred megabyte big..

Cheers :D

If I submit the patch myself and it becomes controversial, I won't be able to make persuasive arguments because I don't really care about the default value (7 is enough for me). That's why the best person to submit the patch is you, because you feel strongly about the proposed change.

In this case, it's a one-character patch, which should be a trivial change. I can walk you through it. Shall we proceed?
Comment 8 Matthias 2019-08-20 08:02:46 UTC
Sure. Simply link me the exact line, I hope I can commit via command line, since KDE offers no GUI way to do this, such as Github

I did in comment 2, but here it is again: https://cgit.kde.org/plasma-workspace.git/tree/klipper/klipper.kcfg#n64

Hello, I want to increase max history size to exceed 2048. Someone mentioned max size is decided by memory, but I cannot understand. I find old history by search textbox, but not hover on More item and check next page, I don't think this operation will consume memory.

Looks like there is nobody with a strong enough opinion that 7 entries is too small to have submitted a patch yet. :) Closing, since this is trivially configurable, and I don't see any reason why 7 is too few a number to use as the default value.
