(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kwin
Version: KDE 3.0.5 CVS/CVSup/Snapshot
Severity: normal
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: Not Specified
OS: Not Specified
OS/Compiler notes: Not Specified

Hello

how to reproduce:
1. start knode.
2. reduce the size of the window so that its width and height are both smaller that the width and height of the screen and position it in the middle of the screen
3. Maximize the window
4. grab the left side of the window frame and move it to the middle of the screen
5. close knode
6. restart knode

Now knode covers only part of the screen. Yet there is not the maximize button but the cascade (or what's its name) button.

This bug has been there for a very long time.

Regards
Volker Augustin

I don't know why this bug still had unconfirmed status. This bug does even
still exist in KDE 3.0.5.

Because i can't reproduce it. What decorations are you using?

If you use the SuSE decoration you will not be able to see the bug from the
icons as there seems to be no difference between the cascade and the maximize
icon. However, the behaviour is reproducible with the KDE 2 or the keramik
decoration (those are the decorations I tried).
And there are other apps showing the same behavior.

I can confirm with a recent kdelibs. After KNode is maximized and you start to
drag the left or right size to decrease the width of the window, the Maximize
button turns to the "Restore" button and the Maximize menu item is unselected
from the window menu, but after closing/restarting it is checked and the icon
says that the window is maximized, altough it isn't. Resizing/moving the
window corrects the situation. What I believe that happens is, that the
window is treated as maximized even if it's maximized only vertically. I'm
using the Keramik Windows Decoration setting.

I can confirm it. Both recent CVS and 3.1 branch using KDE2
decoration.

I can confirm this. After restarting knode, no maximize-button is displayed, but a
restore-button instead.

Oh, I forgot to mention. This is with a kdelibs build from February 28.

I've seen this a few times.

This is not actually a bug. It's simply because windows that are fully maximized have the same
symbol in the maximize buttons as windows maximized only horizontally/vertically. So in this
case, the button shows that KNode is maximized, and it indeed is, vertically.

From a usability point-of-view this is just wrong. Please compare it to KMails
behaviour. There, it does seem to work correctly.

IMO the maximize button should be displayed whenever it is possible to
maximize a window. And since the window is only maximized vertically but not
horizontally it *can* be maximized. For the user maximizing has only one
meaning: Make the window so large that it fills the screen.

Should work fine with current CVS.
