Any chance you can test with a version more recent than 17.12? Like 18.12 or the upcoming 19.04?

Sorry, I don'understand which version are you referring.
If you mean the Kubuntu version, it is 18.04 (the last LTS) updated daily; I should prefer not to abandon an LTS
If you mean the KDE version (5.12.7) the only thing I can do (this is my home/office machine) without risk is to enable the Kubuntu backports ppa; but I don't know which Kde version will be installed.

Should I install this ppa?

Additional informations:
Hardware:
  Santech c37 (https://www.santech.eu/ )
  processor Intel I7
  videocard Nvidia GEForce GTX
  video drivers nvidia-driver-390

The strange thing is that this error apperas only on the Santech notebook.
I have also an old HP Pavillion DV6 notebook which works correctly with the same software installed (Kubuntu 18.04 etc.)

The correctly working HP have:
  processor Intel I3
  videocard Nvidia GeForce GT 320M
  video drivers nvidia-340

LibreOffice/Calligra preview disabled

UPDATE:

disabling previews for LibreOffice and Calligra solves the problem.

Still infestigating to narrow the list of disabled previews
