Combined image showing screenshots of both fuzzy and sharp text on the same icon with different name

Text of icons on desktop (folderview) is fuzzy if the length of the name of the item is short. See screenshot for example: the file shaders.zip has fuzzy text, but if the name is changed to shaders-foobar.zip, it looks clear. Zooming in on the image it is clear that no pure white pixels are being drawn in the first case, as all letters seems to fall between two pixels for some reason. It is as if text below a certain length is rendered or positioned using slightly different logic than long text.

Screenshots are taken off Fedora 29 after a fresh install, running on a Thinkpad W530 with FullHD display at 144 DPI with RGB subpixel ordering and Slight hinting. Changing these settings had no effect on the result.
