Screen shot of view panel with missing thumbnail images...

SUMMARY
Occasionally one or more thumbnails will be missing from the view panel.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create a new folder, set view mode to "Icons" and enable "Show previews".
2. Copy a few images to the folder. (At this stage all thumbnails are correctly generated and shown).
3. Close Dolphin.
4. Relaunch Dolphin and navigate to the folder created.

OBSERVED RESULT (Occasionally)
One or more thumbnails are missing, (the generic icon is shown in it's place), as shown in the attached screenshot.

EXPECTED RESULT
All thumbnails are correctly shown.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: openSUSE 20181224
KDE Plasma Version: 5.14.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.53.0
Qt Version: 5.12.0

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

These missing thumbnails have been generated and can be seen in ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal

This appears quite random, it's not restricted to certain image(s), and/or folders. The thumbnail/preview is always shown correctly in the Information Panel.

I've tried deleting all thumbnails from ~/.cache/thumbnails/ It matters not if there are only a few thumbnail images, or several thousand.

Whilst viewing the folder containing the missing thumbnails:

Using refresh (F5) or toggling "Show previews" does not result in the missing thumbnails appearing.

Changing view mode from "Icon" to either "Compact" or "Details" and then back to "Icon" will cause the missing thumbnails to be correctly displayed. If Dolphin is the closed and reopened there may again be missing thumbnails, although not necessarily the same one(s).

Additional observations...

Initially this was just annoying behaviour I largely ignored.

Since reporting the bug I've observed more closely, it may not be as random as I thought.

The likelihood of it occurring increases as the number of images in the folder decreases. In folders of around 30+ images I don't recall seeing the problem.

Whilst it isn't always the same images per se, (my work-flow dictates folder contents change very frequently), when it does occur it's, as observed so far, always the first and/or last image in the folder.

It doesn't appear user specific, as a new test user is also affected.

Probably an issue with the specific images. If they're not sensitive, could you attach a few?

I don't believe it is a problem with specific images, as sometimes the missing images will display a correct thumbnail, and even if missing from the view panel will always display in the Information Panel. I'm quite certain the thumbnails have been generated correctly, it's just they are occasionally not being shown.

Unfortunately I'm exceeding the file size limit for attachments here...

"The file you are trying to attach is 10280 kilobytes (KB) in size. Attachments cannot be more than 4000 KB."

I could attach the generated thumbnail image(s), if that's of any use, although I doubt it... ;)

@ Nate

I've temporarily created a Dropbox account...

This is the link to the (zipped "KDE-Bug-402761" 92.7 Mib) images used in the initial screenshot.

Whilst the images themselves are not sensitive the exif data contained confidential client information and thus has been stripped. I have confirmed that I'm still seeing the problem with the "exifless" images.

As outlined in the first post of this report:

If I create a new folder, set view mode to "Icons", enable "Show previews", and copy those images to the folder, all thumbnails show correctly. I then navigate away from that folder to another with the same view properties and also containing images, when I then return to the first folder there is a very high probability of the first and/or last item showing the generic icon and not the thumbnail image, as shown in the original screenshot.

Very strange. Thanks for the additional info and for the pictures.

Thumbnails after copy of first image...

Strange indeed...

Don't know if this helps, or just muddies the water further :)

Picking up from the last screenshot showing first and last icons missing:

If at that point I copy the first image (20180815T142820-0-noexif-0.jpg) and paste into the same folder then both the original and its copy (20180815T142820-0-noexif-0-A.jpg) are missing thumbnails.

However, if I now navigate away and return:

It is again, just the first (now, 20180815T142820-0-noexif-0-A.jpg) and last images missing thumbnails...

I won't bother to illustrate with screenshots, but the same thing happens if I copy the last image instead. If I copy any of the intermediate images they, and their copy, always correctly display a thumbnail.

I have downloaded the images, I don't reproduce the bug.

Is it still reproducible Paul, with latest version you are using Paul ?
Comment 11 Paul 2020-12-05 09:32:09 UTC
Yes, still seeing this issue, currently using:

Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20201203
KDE Plasma Version: 5.20.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.76.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.9.11-1-default

However...

It would have been good to find the cause, but as it looks like a very isolated bug, with no other reports and yourself unable to duplicate the issue, perhaps better to close the report.
Comment 12 Paul 2022-09-16 13:58:55 UTC
I've not seen this issue for a while now, I guess it was fixed at some point with one of the regular plasma updates.
