SUMMARY
When kmail is doing something in the background, such as applying filters, emails cannot be opened.  This is super aggravating and should not be the case.  There's times where it's faster to go get my phone and open an email rather than waiting on kmail to figure itself out.  Please re-prioritize the download / opening of emails to preempt anything else kmail is doing.

filtering is done by an external agent.
So for sure it will not block kmail.
