I think the long title of this enhancement suggestion seems to be already clear enough.. I don't want to make it longer than necessary:)
the rest below take as a "PS"..

--------------------------------------
PS:

So, additionally, I'd like to argue why copy paste between projects is a cool thing...

in short: because you can work on a part of a film separately...
which is a GREAT thing... even in the case of a 12 minutes long video...

both premiere pro and vegas makes this possible, they even make importing projects as a "video" into the timeline.. which you know, I'm saying this for those who have not tried those programs...

as far as I can tell, by guessing, the only things to be handled are:

creating a new project file (as if committing SAVE AS ... and then deleting everything from the timeline)

importing the media involved in the copy-pasted section...

checking if the media to be imported already exists in the project
and preventing overwriting it

- - - it could be a basic criterion for the "PARTS" or "SECTIONS" to have the exact same project settings as the "MAIN" project file...

KDENLIVE, as a FREE application makes collaborative projects possible to an unprecedented extend :)
being able to work on one part, one section of the video separately could be a HUGE step even further ahead :)

Can you clarify the scope of this request? There are dozens of objects in Kdenlive. It sounds like you are desiring both ProjectClip and ClipItems to be transferrable between different running Kdenlive instances.

Could you describe a few use-case examples to make this request more appealing to the developers? Thanks for submitting.

thank you Clint,

as a use-case example, imagine working on a project of like 52 minutes... for example...
imagine breaking it down to 4 "chapters"... first 10 minutes, the next 15 minutes, the next 15 minutes, the last 12 minutes...
WHAT YOU WOULD WANT is that once you have completed your part it could be copy-pasted to another project...

the other way to achieve the same thing could be rendering the parts individually and joining them by avidemux.. which is cool..
BUT in Sony Vegas there is this "document-like" concept, that each project is a document.. you just open it, work on it, copy- from it, paste into another one, etc. AND I LOVE that.. I mean, in my (simple) experience it proved to be totally liberating..

- - - - - -

ANOTHER use-example...

imagine you have a project and you would like to use 10 minutes from another project of yours... but with some minor modifications...
it would be great if you could copy that 10 minutes of that project, into your present project...

- - - -

okay, just a short "counter example"...
you have two videos.. two KDENLIVE projects..
one you are working on, and one you created last month...
now you would like to have 5 minutes of that video from last month...
but when you realize that, you have already made 15 minutes of your new project...

what are your options?
edit separately, create a save-as project from the one you need 5 minutes of,
export it, and export your project.. in 2 pieces, A and C.. and join them with avidemux like A-B-C?

it would be great if it could be done like "copy and paste that 5 mins from that project into this one".. and life could go one...

I don't know if these examples are good enough though :)

Okay I see what you are saying. There is already a way to do this using the Library.

https://kdenlive.org/en/project/the-library-copy-paste-between-projects/

You can also share .kdenlive and distribute them, as long as recipients refresh the location of the clip files. Let me know if you were thinking of something more.

Hi,

Thanks for all your efforts making Kdenlive such a great tool!

I have another use case for this issue...

Unless I'm missing some aspect of the Library feature, it's not possible to use it to copy an editable sequence of clips, effects, & transitions to a new project. I can use it to copy a sequence and load it into another project as single unit - but not edit it in the new project.

I had created three different projects destined to be connected together live with some other tools, but the needs changed such that I wanted to put them all together in one project and re-edit them.

As it stands I'll probably end up re-editing them in the original projects and then using the Library, but this is a rather awkward workflow.

At a deeper UX level, not being able to just copy a chunk of timeline, copy it, then paste into the project where I want it is surprising and annoying.

I imagine that this would be pretty complicated to implement (ensuring all relevant data is included, and ids are adjusted to avoid clashes, etc.), whilst the Library sort-of covers this situation, so understand that it won't be a high priority - but just wanted to note that there would be value in implementing it.

If I understood your request right, this is possible with the new timeline2 since a while. Can you please test it with a recent version?
