Description tempel.julian 2018-08-21 20:58:40 UTC
I have these files in a folder: "2", "4" and "10" (without " signs).
When I let Dolphin sort them by name, it is displayed like this:
10
2
4

or vice versa
4
2
10

This is highly illogical. Instead, it should be
2
4
10

or vice versa
10
4
2
Comment 1 tempel.julian 2018-08-21 20:59:48 UTC
Forgot to add that basically every other file browser sorts like I am proposing.
Comment 2 Christoph Feck 2018-08-22 01:07:18 UTC
Do you have "Natural" sorting mode enabled in Dolphin settings? If yes, what is your locale/language setting?
Comment 3 tempel.julian 2018-08-22 10:38:55 UTC
Alphabetical, case insensitive. My locale
$ locale
LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

German is also defined language in my Plasma system settings.
Comment 4 Christoph Feck 2018-08-22 10:56:15 UTC
Does selecting "Natural" mode help? The alphabetical modes do not use number ordering, so "10" < "2", as in "Ba" < "C".
Comment 5 tempel.julian 2018-08-22 11:03:25 UTC
Yep, natural orders as expected. Thanks!
So, I might just have understood the options offered by Dolphin wrong? Or could it be argued that also alphabetical ordering should treat numbers like natural?
Comment 6 Christoph Feck 2018-08-22 12:07:47 UTC
The alphabetical options exist for those that do not want numbers treated specially, e.g. for a list of hex hashes.

> might just have understood the options offered by Dolphin wrong?

Those options should at least have a tooltip; reopening.
Comment 7 Justin Zobel 2020-10-26 05:56:53 UTC
Natural sorting is the default now it seems and the other two sorting modes now seem self explanatory to me.

Thoughts?
