the version requirement on fwupd is 1.0.7, but it seems to be building just fine 1.0.6 (which is what is in ubuntu 18.04 for example)

The Requirement is now reduced to 1.06, the backend is building on this version. The requirement was reduced via (https://phabricator.kde.org/D14933) in this commit (10b790f430526db5ae2a409f8b4190fdafd681cf)
