I have recently installed 4.14.8 KDE package on two similar systems using Scientific Linux 7.5. On one of the systems, the grey icon on the top bar for Krfb desktop does not show. It is there, however, and I can click on topbar to open it.

Otherwise, it works nicely on both systems.

Thank you for reporting this issue in KDE software. As it has been a while since this issue was reported, can we please ask you to see if you can reproduce the issue with a recent software version?
