Having done a little ill-informed digging, it's possible the problem lies in KIO Slaves. It made my head hurt just reading the code :-) Yep, this is in KIO. I want to a directory of "public" news files and stuff. I created /home/shared/notices/public ("shared" is not a user) and made the "public" directory setgid (chmod g+s public) and in group "users". If I copy a file into the directory using the command line "cp stuff /home/shared/notices/public" the copied file gets group "users" as I expect. In detail, the file ~paul/stuff was owned by paul:paul. When copied, it became /home/shared/notices/public/stuff owned by paul:users. Now I added a folderview widget to my desktop, and set it to display the contents of the public folder. If I drag and drop the same file into the folderview, it retains its old group (which is the one with the same name as my userid) and so it does not become public. It remains owned by paul:paul, which is not what I want. The same is true if I "Create New... Basic link to file or directory..." object on the desktop, and point it at the same directory, drag and drop files retain their old group setting, and don't get changed.
