If I say someone's nick like @laurent, I can click on that to open a private chat.

But I can't do that if laurent is speaking himself, @laurent appears in the message, but I can't click on that.

This appears to be the only way to start a private conversation with someone, right?

Ah ok I see the problem.
I will investigate for fixing it this week.
