I user a wacom intuos touch and pen tablet. Zooming with my fingers doesn't work well as the zoom level goes up suddenly with a little swipe and not gradually. 

I expect a smooth zoom, with more steps in between to give us more control over the zoom factor.

this would require rewriting the zoom function to work with the smooth zoom instead of the discreate zoom which is super complicated.

I thought poke1024 already implemented it on OS X for 4.0?

Yes, it was already in pre-alpha 2 I believe.
