On Mac, its possible to access external volumes from root level but this directory "Volumes" is a hidden folder. Please don't add hidden files (just messy on Mac) but please add your for mounted devices through the reference dialog.

Same here, we're no longer working on the old reference images docker. There will be a new solution in Krita 4.1.
