open Disks / gnome-disks -> on a SMART enabled drive click the hamburger button -> "SMART Data & Self-Tests..." -> "Start Self-test" -> start any test -> plasmashell shows 100% CPU on one core and panel unhides, but shows nothing (only former screen background visible), I cannot do anything on the desktop any more

Works on both my Kubuntu 17.10 machines.

needs a backtrace with debug symbols installed to be useful
