Description Ruedi Hofer 2017-10-29 07:58:23 UTC
Dear all,
suffering from a huge memory leak when using "media frame widget", I'm coming from Bug 382262 and confirm that memory leak still present. 16G Ram are eaten up in less than 2 hours. Restarting plasmashell releases the memory, after "media frame widget" had been closed. I mark it 'crash' because after the upgrade to kubuntu artful, the computer crashes after 2 hours.

I open a new Bug, since no other bug matches. Bug 382262 is already closed, Bug 381000 is different topic.

kubuntu Artful ppa backports landing
Plasma 5.11.2
KDE Frameworks 5.39.0
Qt 5.9.1
Kernel 4.13.0-16
OS 64bit.
Comment 1 Christoph Feck 2017-11-15 19:38:07 UTC
Please test with Qt 5.9.2 or newer.

Comment 2 Ruedi Hofer 2017-11-25 09:12:42 UTC
Is there a ppa for Qt 5.9.2 and artful which you recommend?
Comment 3 Ruedi Hofer 2018-05-06 14:13:32 UTC
The error/problem is still present with bionic and Qt 5.9.5. After 2 hours 10G of ram are eaten up and the computer stalls.
(might it be that files image files are loaded, but never closed/unloaded)
Please have a look into that issue.
Comment 4 Christoph Feck 2018-05-06 15:21:33 UTC
As far as I know, the fix first landed in Qt 5.11.
Comment 5 Mirek Mieszczak 2018-06-26 19:13:30 UTC
I suffer also from this bug, on Gentoo KDE Frameworks.
Comment 6 Nate Graham 2020-01-12 21:35:20 UTC
Can anyone reproduce this while using Qt 5.11 or later?

I personally cannot observe problems associated with this bug anymore.
So in my opinion it can be closed.
Comment 10 Gerhard 2020-09-24 21:22:48 UTC
The bug is still present. I tried it on Plasma 5.19.5,KF 5.73.0 on openSUSE Tumbleweed

If you leave the change interval to 10 sec and show a slide show with hundrets of images (jpeg, 3 to 5 MB each), my system memory of 32 GB is eaten up within half a day. You can easily see with KInfocenter / Memory tab how each new image eats up more and more memory.
Comment 11 Daniel Mader 2021-01-21 08:36:00 UTC
I can confirm this bug is still present. It reappeared sometime in 2020 for openSUSE Leap and Tumbleweed packages, at least. Happens on all our systems, Intel and AMD.

Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20210119
KDE Plasma Version: 5.20.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.78.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.10.7-1-default
OS Type: 64-bit

Maybe this bug is related to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=368838?

I can also confirm this bug is still there after all these years. Im a new user using Fedora 40 KDE Wayland with plasma 6.1, nvidia rtx 3060, NVIDIA-SMI 550.90.07, Driver Version: 550.90.07, CUDA Version: 12.4.

Whenever I put a media frame on my desktop, my memory usage consistently keeps climbing until my whole system freezes, forcing me to do a hard restart. This has been pretty much the only real issue i wasnt able to fix as a new user, and its driving me up the wall.

I have found that killing and restarting plasmashell via the command "killall plasmashell && kstart5 plasmashell" works as a sort of bandaid fix. I have disabled the Widget for the mean time however.

I plead to all that this issue be revised, because after all these years, this is STILL a problem, and quite important for new user experiences to not shoo them away from KDE!
