I opened up the work and testing that I did for this on phabricator: https://phabricator.kde.org/D8053

The patch that I'm currently proposing is also attached to this report.

I reworked the hotkeys for Alt+1..0 to only switch between tabs of channels in the context of the current server, excluding the server, while Alt+Shift+1..0 switch between tabs representing servers. I think this might make managing active servers more intuitive and easy for people who have many servers and channels opened at once, while still being useful for people who only have a few.
