When configuring global shortcuts it can be preferable to select a group of shortcuts for a group of actions on keys that layed out in a specific pattern, e.g. close to each other.

A view of the keyboard layout (similar to the one shown when selecting keyboard layout during the install process of many distros) where symbols on each key indicate if they are taken by the plain modifier keys. Pressing the modifier keys (or combinations hereof, e.g. ctrl+shift) could update the key colours if they are taken or not.
