It would be great to be able to see/edit the current star rating as well as title/caption in Preview mode. Right panel can be left for Tags Tree then and there will be no jumping from tab to tab required.

Stars are easy to set using hot keys but to see the current rating you have to either go back to thumbnails view or switch right panel to Description tab.

Title/Caption fields with small font would look very nice under the preview.

Please consider.

Here is a sketch of what I mean:

It probably won't be needed if this suggestion implemented though:

I don't agree with your mockup.

In fact the way to make a canvas overlay with all properties from right sidebar duplicate again the way to operate.

All this properties are already changeable through the context menu, the shortcuts, and the sidebar. An canvas overlay will always bloat the most important content in digiKam : the image. This is not the case with all others solution.

I vote for no...

Fair enough. I just thought when you are able see the title and the caption and the tags..and the rating, scrolling through pictures is like reading a story. The sidebar is not very visual and it might be minimized on small (laptop) screens.
If tags and ratings can be seen in thumbnails view why wouldn't make them visible in Preview (optional)? Right panel stays there for both thumbnails and preview modes anyways.

Again, small font and transparency help to keep items away from your eyes unless you look at them specifically. Also, this could be optional similar to the text under thumbnails

I have all this information (optionally) in a top bar where the thumbnails are shown in a horizontal list. I am unable to hide this bar in Preview Mode, how did you do that?

Ctrl + T

To be honestly I forgot about the thumbbar...

To be honestly, the thumbbar is pretty useless.
It takes too much space and it only shows 1.Thumbnails 2. Star rating (editable) 3. GPS icon
Considering that an average user probably won't care about thumbnails in Preview mode it is too much to give up about 10% of the screen for an ability to see/set star ratings.

Works o bug 377857 advance well and usability of image properties tab have been improved with newt 8.1.0.
And as i already said in my preview comments, the mockup from this file is not the right way.
I close this file now.
