I am using Manjaro with Kate 16.12.3. I configured Kate with following layout:
- Open a new session
- split view vertical
- split both edit areas horizontal (= 2 x 2 edit areas)
- add any text files in the areas
- save as a named session
- close kate
- open kate with th last session and change to a new session -> kate crashes

The issue exists in 17.04.1 too.
