This has been happening for while. I can reproduce every time with my user account in a X11 session. I cannot reproduce with the same user in a Wayland session, neither with another user in a X11 session.

Please switch back to glx compositing and try again.

It looks like I'm hit by https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=378114, right?
Do I just need to drop the GLPlatformInterface=egl line from kwinrc?

yep - unfortunately many users seem to be affected by this problem :-(

yes and then restart KWin
