Disabling opengl should "fix" the canvas not showing changes. It's a known issue with some version of intel's HD graphics drivers. What is your GPU type and version and driver version? Oh, and not being able to get a wacom intuos to work on Linux is strange, too, that should work out of the box without any configuration.
