I'm using akregator 5.2.3, with a full up to date kubuntu with KDE backports.

Akregator crashes everytime I quit it, and so it loses all my read/unread feeds.

Very annoying.

Did you try Akregator 5.3 or 5.4? The newest release is 5.4.1.

For Kubuntu, there are staging PPAs:
https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/staging-kdeapplications/

These have 5.4.1 version, I did not find 5.3.x PPAs. You could ask in a forum of your distribution.

It'd only for zeisty and to update it I would need to probably upgrade hundreds of other packages :-(

Unless you provide a different backtrace, let's assume you get bug 365608 (fixed since 5.3.0).
