- What I was doing when the application crashed:
Navigating on multiple tabs open to different folders of the same file system. I had Okular open on several pdf files, opened from dolphin (by double click).

- Custom settings of the application:
* Double click to open files and folders
* Details view mode
* Several local and remote places added to the side bar
* Information view open
* Files sorted by name, descending order

The crash does not seem to be reproducible.

What's the version of your vlc package?

If it's vlc 2.2.4-5 or newer, please leave a comment in https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/51541 saying that the bug is still valid...
