Screenshot of user interface

I used the KDEnlive ppa to install this version. Various icons and buttons in the interface just show a square with an outline and it's not possible to tell what they do until I hover my mouse over them and read the tooltip.

I didn't have any problem when I was running other versions of KDEnlive. So, I'm not sure why I would need to change that variable. Also, when I go under Settings > Theme I am not seeing any theme choices. When I click the Configure button I get the following error message in a dialog box.

Cannot start Colors Settings panel from KDE Control Center. Please check your system

So, perhaps there is something that has not been installed? I am running Ubuntu 16.04 and as mentioned in the OP I installed the latest stable of KDEnlive through the ppa.

So something happened during your upgrade. You have to try debugging the issue.

So install breeze to see at least if it solves the problem.

For that you need to install the plasma desktop...

Try doing the suggestions to see if those help...

I have installed breeze. I still don't see the icons. I do see other theme options, but it doesn't matter which one I pick; the icons still don't show. Even if I select to force breeze icons they don't show.

Delete (or at least rename) your $HOME/.local/share/kxmlgui5/kdenlive/kdenliveui.rc

If that doesn't work do a clean install... this is not a Kdenlive issue... I am closing this in the tracker. Please ask for help in the forum, I am sure many ubuntu users can give you a hand there.

Cheers
