I have also observed this happening. It's been a long time until now and I seems never have notice such a problem with my Samsung S8 + openSUSE Tumbleweed. Are you still bothered with this issue? I have not tested it, recently, but revisiting this bug report makes be wonder if KDE Connect is responsible for some other odd SMS behaviours, especially missed messages (even though "Notification Sync" and "Telephony notifier" are turned off). I will make a note to test it, and I will report back.
