Depending on which git version you are talking about the background isn't blue. The password field code also hasn't changed since 5.7.1 and continues to pass the ask-for-password test we have [1]. Sounds more like your initramfs doesn't include the png assets of the theme. Check that. If you believe that to be in order, get a debug log of plymouth.
