The main search field should have like other similiar elements in KDE Application the "Clear" button. Please check attached image for details.

Shouldn't it rather be implemented in Kirigami to make the clear button available to all kirigami applications?

Yes, Kirigami.SearchField exists now.

But this bug report seems like it was referring to Discover not QQC2 in general.

In any case, there's a clear button there now.
