I have Digikam 5.0 on a Windows 10 machine and tags come up without a problem. But my other computer is running Ubuntu Linux and tags don't appear at all and when I try to add a Tag I get an error message: Failed to add tag to database. What can I do about this problem?

Sound like the place to store database files as problem (disk space, directory read only,  right access, shared network path, etc...)

Problem is definitively not reproducible here.

Check your configuration.
