Ark uses the unfree program unrar. 7z can also open RAR files. Since version 15.12 (november 2015), it can open RARv5 files too.

So Ark can drop the need for unrar and use 7z instead.

Unarchiver also supports opening RAR files. It has a command-line version called unar which is .e.g. packaged by Debian.

Hi, for technical reasons we cannot use 7z for RAR files. However, Ark 16.04 already has support for The Unarchiver. Just make sure to uninstall unrar and install unar.
