I just rediscovered the Audio Volume Settings dialog (right-click on the Audio Volume applet) where I found the feature of increasing the volume to over 100 % which I read about some time ago.

I think an "Advanced..." button which is placed maybe on the bottom of the applet popup-window would make this dialog easier discoverable.
