Both SMPlayer and Clementine work just fine here and so does VLC and Nuvola. I also don't get said console message. VLC work just fine SMPlayer and Clementine - no kde.dataengine.mpris is to blame (kde.dataengine.mpris: "org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.smplayer" does not implement org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties correctly) I don't see how this is the fault of the mpris dataengine. All it does is ask the player stuff on DBus. If it then crashes this is an application bug. Can you run plasmashell from console? It should print out the error message that it got as Debug output (not in your log), eg.
