Description Thomas Pfeiffer 2016-05-28 21:28:44 UTC
As already discussed on the mailing list, the VDG has decided to replace the launcher icon with the Plasma logo. We have already changed the icon start-here-kde in the breeze repo, please apply that also in the Plasma theme.

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Kai Uwe Broulik 2016-05-29 02:43:39 UTC
Can you please link where the decision was made ftr? I don't recall reading that in the thread.
Comment 2 Thomas Pfeiffer 2016-05-29 11:27:22 UTC
Ah, right, we have never stated it explicitly on the Plasma list, but the VDG has already internally reached consensus on this long ago.

I've asked Jens to make an official statement on the list.
Comment 3 Jens Reuterberg 2016-05-29 12:29:24 UTC
Official statement: yes, replace. Sry like Thomas said we where all in agreement but forgot to tell anyone else :)
Comment 4 Ivan Čukić 2016-05-29 20:38:27 UTC
I'm sorry to poop on the parade, but I don't really think VDG has a warrant for a decision like this. I don't even consider this as a Plasma-only decision despite it being a plasma-only change.
Comment 5 Kai Uwe Broulik 2016-05-29 20:44:06 UTC
If we were to do this we should probably have a start-here-plasma and a start-here-kde (for those who prefer the KDE logo). And I don't think the bug tracker is the right place to have this discussion.
Comment 6 Thomas Pfeiffer 2016-05-29 20:47:38 UTC
Offering both makes sense (so users can choose), as long as the Plasma icon is the default we ship.
But fine, if you want to get back to the ML, we'll write a mail there.

So the icon in the launcher was changed with an update in KDE Neon...
How the heck am I over the phone going to explain to my daft family members which button to click?
A K was super easy. Now I have to try with the "3 different sized dots and an arrow."
From a user perspective the new launcher icon is bad - first because it changed, second because its undescribable.
From a KDE fan perspective I'm sad to see the last piece of visual identity disappear. It's no longer KDE, but Plasma which is part of the kde project

I'm sorry, but you just unwittingly confirmed our decision, because expressing this was precisely the point of the change.
Plasma has been its own brand for years now, but it was difficult to establish it as long as the KDE logo was still much more present than the Plasma logo in the desktop itself.
If the change makes you see Plasma as an independent brand which is just part of the KDE project (we use the term "community") then we have succeeded.

As for the description problem: Why not try "The button on the lower-left corner of your screen?" Much easier than "The button with the K and the gear", and if your family members have managed to move it somewhere else, chances are they know enough to identify it as "The launcher icon" as well.
Also, most distributions replace the launcher icon with their own logo, anyway, so it's not a good way to identify the button in the first place.

It is now the Plasma logo icon. Marking this as done.

Well, I was suspecting it was the reason. I just don't think it's a good idea to rebrand the desktop.

I don't think you can think of me as representative of the general brand perception. Here you will only meet the 1%.

It doesn't look like a button.
