Description nono31393 2016-05-22 12:18:14 UTC
My laptop is currently running Archlinux.
I have a few external monitors (one at home and one at work), both at 1080p compatible.
Until a few months ago, I was able to connect and disconnect my laptop to any of those monitors and it would directly recognized which monitor it was connected to.
It would then set the screen resolution for the second screen and show it at the right position next to my main laptop screen (one is on top of the main screen, the second being on the left of the main screen).

For a few months now, when I connect my screen, the resolution is set by default to 1280×720 px. Then I go to the System Settings -> Display and Monitor, but I don't have a list to choose the resolution.
The settings window only shows current 1280×720px and no drop down menu.

One solution I found was to disconnect and reconnect the screen several times, both with the settings window open and close until the dropdown menu appears.
Another solution is to edit manually the .local/share/kscreen/ corresponding file.

For connecting my screens, I am using a mini-display port -> hdmi adapter and the internal graphical Intel chipset. (I have an NVidia optimus compatible laptop)

Unfortunately I didn't wrote down the version at which the problem appears because I thought it would quickly disappear with the following versions.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Connect an external monitor to my Intel chipset
2. Open the systems settings
3. No drop down menu in the Display settings

Actual Results:
The screen resolution cannot be changed from the System settings and once the change is done, it is not saved when disconnecting and reconnecting the screen.

Expected Results:
A dropdown menu should be available for me to set the right 1920×1080 resolution and that resolution should be saved and resotred when disconnecting and reconnecting the screen.

could you provide the output of xrandr when adding the second screen and a screenshot of the configuration module when it's wrong?

Please excuse me I should have closed this a few weeks ago.

The problem fixed itself by doing an update to a newer version of KDE.
I do not remember which version update though.
