Description Roman Gilg 2016-05-01 13:05:25 UTC
When in detail mode / tree view, drawing a rectangle around an item, doesn't select it. After that pressing up/down navigates from previously selected item. You can see this also by watching the little bar under the item, which doesn't change to the new one.

This is especially annoying when using "one click to open", since then you have to draw a rectangle around something to mark it.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Activate Details View mode
2. Select some item A (file or folder) with cursor keys
3. Draw rectangle around other item B
4. Press up or down to navigate selection

Actual Results:
Navigation starts from item A

Expected Results:
Navigation starts from item B

Arch Linux, Applications 16.04

I'm not able to reproduce in Dolphin 16.12.3 or 17.08.0. When I use the keyboard select one item, and then use the cursor/box to select a different item, the selection cursor moves from the second selection as expected, not the first.

Just tried it on Neon Dev Unstable, still not working for me. But maybe it's meant as a "feature" (having different selection than active element).

Do you have one click to open activated as well?

I see now. I can reproduce it 100%. I also notice the following:

If while dragging a box, your mouse moved over the item itself, the selection marker is moved to that item.

If while dragging a box you do *not* move the mouse over any items, the selection marker stays where it was before.

This behavior is 100% reproducible, so I suspect it's intentional. So you can opt to move the selection marker to the items you're dragging a box around by making sure that your mouse cursor passes over the item you want selected.

Marking this as resolved since the feature already exists in the form you want it--albeit in a slightly subtle form. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Hey, thanks for the tip. Could be still make more sense to have the selection marker move always to the last selected item with or without the mouse cursor hovering about it. This feels still like a bug to be honest.

The fact that this is so reproducible makes me think it really is a hidden feature. For what reason I don't know, but I'd be open to re-opening this issue if we get more reports of confusion.

I think it's somehow related with the behavior when you have selected multiple files and then press Ctrl+Arrow-up/down.

In this case the selection won't change but the "underlined/active" item. Seems still somewhat counter intuitive and/or over engineered.
