I deleted all the folders / files in the .kde directory. The next start showed the assistent for the first start, now digiKam is working. This was the second start after database deletion. The first start ended - after the question for the pictures path - in a long splash screen, then the view with directories and pictures came up. Switched back to old database. Still working fine.
