Description Tristan Miller 2016-03-18 11:32:39 UTC
The "Display Configuration" section of the "Display and Monitor" module initially divides the window into two main areas. At the top is a diagram of the monitor layout. At the bottom is a large blank area. (See attached screenshot.) The only obvious actions available to the user are to set the primary display and to unify monitor outputs. There does not seem to be any way of setting the display resolution, orientation, refresh rate, etc.

The problem is that the user must first select a display from the upper part of the window; only then do the display options appear. However, it is not immediately obvious that this diagram is interactive as opposed to static. I have observed several users leaving the "Display Configuration" section in frustration at not finding any way of changing the resolution.

I suggest the problem can be solved in one of two ways:

1. When the "Display Configuration" section is first displayed and no display has been selected yet, the blank area in the bottom half of the window should instead have the following message: "Select a display to change its settings."

2. When the "Display Configuration" section is first displayed, the system should automatically select one of the displays (preferably the primary display) so that its settings are immediately displayed.

I am using System Settings 4.11.20 on KDE 4.14.9 as packaged by openSUSE 13.2.

Reproducible: Always

I think the primary/internal screen should be pre-selected.

Yes, first or only screen should be pre-selected.
Comment 4 Thomas Pfeiffer 2016-03-18 17:24:05 UTC
In 5.5.5, this already seems to be the case. When I open the KCM, the primary (and only, in my case) display is already selected.

Works for me too on 5.6
