Outside of the application only chromium was on (mayne a RAM problem?)
Krita crashed when I tried to create a new layer. There were about 5 layers active, nothing specil, no masks and stuff.

The crash does not seem to be reproducible.

Please find a way to upgrade. 2.8.5 was 1.5 years ago. We're on 2.9.11 for stable and 3.0 for pre-alpha. For the later we have portable linux builds available from the news posts on the website.
