Description slartibart70 2015-12-09 17:01:22 UTC
Open font manager from systemsettings and look at the preview fonts (right hand side) after selecting one fint from the list.
The preview does not take any smoothing into account, has rough edges and looks just ugly.
Instead, using the same font in other applications (i.e. libreOffice), everything is rendered nicely (smooth edges, subpixel rendering and the like is working as it should)

Reproducible: Always

could this be in virtualbox and vmware only?
I tested with physical hardware (intel laptop, intel graphics) and there it's ok.
The error can still be seen in the virtualized environments.

Also happens on a laptop with (older) amd graphics without additional amd drivers. I suspect the xrender engine being responsible for the problem?

Seems to be the same as Bug#336089, which should be fixed in 5.5.4...
