Do you still have access to that network? Is this still a problem? If so which versions of libsmbclient are you using? From looking at the current GVFS code gnome does pretty much what we do, which is to say it tells libsmbclient to use kerberos and only if that fails fall back to NTLM, so I would rather expect the same timeout.
