Only happens in Dolphin 15.08.1, does not happen when using dolphin4 (14.12.3). Using Ubuntu 15.10 Beta.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enter / into the address bar
2. Press enter

Actual Results:  
Kernel panic (blinking shift key) or system freeze a second after showing the folder contents

Expected Results:  
no freeze

Thanks for the bug report, but if the kernel crashes (not reproducible for me, by the way), then this is a bug in the kernel that Ubuntu ships in their beta release, and not in Dolphin. Please report this issue to Ubuntu.

Even if it is not KDE related: I'm having the same problem.
To be more specific: The system freezes when I open the root folder as my normal user in any file browser (e.g. dolphin, gwenview). Anyway, the system does not crash when I first open dolphin as root user and afterwards browse the root folder.

What kind of hardware are you using? I'm using a Dell XPS13. Are you also on Kubuntu?
What I've found out so far it happens when creating previews for the proc and dev folder. The system does not alway kernel panic, it sometimes just ignores the touchpad, while the touchscreen is still working. However it usually locks up completely after opening a few applications.
